Ellsworth family photograph collection, 1860-1999 1880-1990

3,900 prints and negatives (some in color) that document the family of S. George and Maria Smith Ellsworth from their ancestors in the 1860s to their immediate family in the 1990s. Included are images of LDS Church missions and activities, World War II, research and professional work, family portraits, vacations, and activities. Taken together it is perhaps the most complete visual documentation of a single family in Utah. The photos were taken at a variety of locations in Arizona, Nevada, Utah, California, New Mexico, Hawaii, Missouri, Australia, Lebanon, and the Philippines. Photograph formats include silver gelatin, albumen, realphoto postcards, and tintype. Negative formats include 35 mm and larger silver gelatin negatives, nitrate negatives (in cold storage), and glass negatives.

Maria S. Ellsworth was born in 1918 in Hunt, Arizona. Later her family moved to Snowflake, Arizona, where she grew up in a family of eleven, including a twin. She graduated from Arizona State Teaching College at Flagstaff May 29, 1940, and taught Kindergarten and First grade. Samuel Claridge was born on 5 December 1828 in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshaire, England. As a young man he ran a bakery in Hemel Hempstead. On 9 December 1849 he married Charlotte Joy (born 28 September 1819). Claridge joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in June 1851 and emigrated to Utah in 1853. James C. Ellsworth was born in 1885 in New Mexico. He married Julia Claridge in 1907. Ellsworth served an LDS mission to Australia between 1908-1910. At various periods in his life, he worked as an oiler and a sweeper; a town clerk in Safford, Arizona; and a mayor of Payson, Utah. James and Julia had five sons.
